These days, that’s all playing out on the cloud. Alibaba Cloud on Wednesday said that the Group’s full adoption of cloud infrastructure and technologies allowed Alibaba to process as many as 554,000 orders per second during this year’s 11.11, or 1,360 times more than the inaugural 11.11 in 2009. Moreover, the company’s core e-commerce platform handled orders from all over the world – with zero downtime – for the full 24 hours. Here are some other fun computational facts about 11.11. This year, Alibaba Cloud processed 970 petabytes in that single day, which is equal to about 12,901 years of nonstop HD video recording (and video tends to generate some pretty big data files). Also, the liquid-cooling technology that Alibaba Cloud employs in its data centers saved 200,000 kilowatt hours of energy – enough to power 18 U.S. households for a year.
