Alibaba News Roundup: AliExpress UEFA EURO 2024 Events Kick Off; Alibaba Joins DOT Europe

This week, Alibaba Group’s cross-border e-commerce site AliExpress unveiled a roster of offline fan engagement activities from Munich to Hamburg as matches begin for the UEFA EURO 2024 tournament.

In other news, Alibaba has become the latest member of DOT Europe, the voice for internet companies across the continent.

AliExpress Launches UEFA EURO 2024 Events for Fans Across Germany  

International online retail marketplace AliExpress will host a series of football-inspired events online and offline in five cities across Germany as the UEFA EURO 2024 competition gets started.

The platform’s AliExpress EURO 2024 event series will include two fixed locations in Munich and Berlin open to football fans throughout the tournament, in addition to pop-ups in Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Hamburg.

In May, AliExpress tapped former English midfielder David Beckham to be the face of its ‘Score More with AliExpress’ campaign that offers users a chance to win prizes each time a goal is made during tournament matches.

“Whether you’re a football fan or not, I can think of no-one better to show how easy it is to win with AliExpress during UEFA EURO 2024,” said Gary Topp, European Commercial Director, AliExpress.

Alibaba Joins DOT Europe

This week, public policy organization DOT Europe announced Alibaba as its latest member, joining over 20 tech companies including Google, Apple, Microsoft and X.

DOT Europe is on a mission to foster an innovative, open and safe internet for Europe’s citizens and businesses.

“We are honoured and humbled for the opportunity to join DOT Europe and to engage with other member companies on important policy matters for our e-commerce platforms operating in the EU,” Eric Pelletier, Vice President and Head of International Government Affairs at Alibaba, noted in a statement.

“Alibaba’s services are popular with both consumers and businesses in Europe. I am particularly happy to further strengthen our representation of the leading online marketplaces,” said Constantin Gissler, Director General at DOT Europe.

Alibaba’s 2024 Global Math Competition Announces Preliminary Round Results

Over 800 participants from 17 countries and regions reached the last stage of this year’s Alibaba Global Math Competition, the organizing committee announced on Thursday along with the preliminary round results.

Contestants from top global academic institutions including Peking University, the University of Oxford and the University of Bonn will battle for a grand prize of $30,000 during an eight-hour online final round on June 22.
