Alibaba Group’s Rural Taobao program is helping to raise living standards in China’scountryside by providing e-commerce access to millions of the country’s poorer residents. More than 16,000 Taobao Rural Service Centers are already in place and in the next 3-5 years, Alibaba plans to expand the programto 100,000 villages and 1,000 rural counties, enough to cover one-sixth of all Chinese villages and one-third of all counties. Aliresearch, Alibaba’s research arm, estimates online consumption in rural China will reach RMB 1 trillion by 2020.
